“Shipping box” and “mailer box” get used interchangeably, but they are built for different jobs. Picking the right one affects both your unboxing experience and your shipping costs.
What a shipping box is built for
Shipping boxes and corrugated boxes are engineered for one job: getting a product from A to B without damage, at the lowest possible cost per unit. They are typically plain corrugated cardboard, often used as the outer layer that a smaller, branded package sits inside of, or for bulk and business-to-business shipments where the end customer never really “unboxes” it as an experience.
What a mailer box is built for
Mailer boxes are designed to be both the shipping container and the brand experience in one. They typically fold flat, ship efficiently, and open in a way that is designed to be photographed and shared — full-color exterior printing, a branded interior, sometimes a tear-strip or magnetic-style closure. They are built for direct-to-consumer ecommerce, where the box itself is part of what the customer is paying for.
Cost and volume trade-offs
Plain shipping and corrugated boxes are cheaper per unit and make sense at high volumes or for B2B shipments where branding does not reach an end consumer. Mailer boxes cost more per unit because of the printing and finishing, but that cost is doing double duty — protection and marketing — which is why direct-to-consumer brands find the extra cost pays for itself in repeat purchases and social sharing.
Can you use both?
Yes, and many brands do: a branded mailer box for the retail customer, shipped inside a plain corrugated case when sending multiple units to a retailer, distributor or fulfillment center. The mailer box protects the brand experience; the shipping box protects the mailer boxes in transit.
Which one should you start with?
If you sell direct to consumers and unboxing matters to your brand, start with a mailer box. If you are shipping in bulk to other businesses or fulfillment centers, a shipping or corrugated box is the more efficient spend.
